PE and Sport
At Hawthorn Park, our aim is to create a life-long love of sport and physical activity in our pupils, through exposing them to a wide range of sporting activities. This is developed in pupils in our Nursery; advancing their movement and space skills, through to Year 6 pupils applying game related skills in their appropriate context.
Pupils at Hawthorn Park receive 2 hours of PE a week. From Reception to Year 6, one hour a week is taken by specialist coaches (Premier Sports) and the other hour by the pupils' class teacher. Premier Sports provide additional support to our teaching staff to further improve their teaching of PE by providing resources and opportunities for teaching staff to observe their practice. Sports Premium funding is partially used to support the cost and development of our teachers' delivery of PE.
Throughout the year pupils will participate in a wide range of sporting activities such as Rugby, Football, Basketball, Gymnastics, Dance, Cricket, Rounders, Outdoor Adventurous Activities and Athletics. As pupils progress through the school these skills are developed from fundamental skills such as hand-eye co-ordination and spatial awareness to complex combination of skills such as performing Gymnastics routines that include the use of apparatus, flight and locomotion and applying game related strategies such as offensive and defensive lines in Rugby.
For Year 6 pupils we also offer swimming lessons that take place at the local swimming pool (Houghton Regis Leisure Centre) which is within a 5-minute walk from the school. They receive one lesson a week for a term and this will replace the teacher delivered PE lesson for that term. To support this, the school does ask for a £2 contribution towards the cost of using the swimming pool and the hiring of specialist swimming coaches. Pupil Premium funding is also used to support families where cost may prevent pupils from participating to facilitate full participation. 54% of our Year 6 pupils currently meet the national curriculum expectation for swimming and we expect this number to increase after the Year 6 swimming lessons in the summer term.
A wide range of extra-curricular activities are offered after school including; Gymnastics, Dodgeball and Multi-Sports. As outside providers are used for these activities, a cost is associated with these activities.
